Genuinely, one of the measures that’s stopped book banning the most when districts implement it, is having the would-be banners fill out a form that demonstrates if they’ve read the book or not. Like where they have the summarize the plot and characters and do a mini book report and give a review. It stops them in their tracks. This is why in my high school, every time someone wanted to ban a book it ended up going nowhere. There was one where a conservative student wanted to ban the manga “Legal Drug” for having a marijuana leaf on the cover, then got the form that required them to actually read and either balked, or read it and realized it was not pro-drug at all.

(The other one that reduces book bans even further is “requiring the would-be banner to be affiliated with this actual school in some way, either by being a student, faculty/staff or a parent of a child at the school” because the vast majority of bans are “activists” with no affiliation with the school who just travel around trying to do this in districts all over the U.S. IIRC a few years ago someone crunched the numbers and just 51 parents were responsible for all the book bans that year nationally. 51! In a country with 50 states, with over 300 million people total!)

Verified: Microsoft 365 gets massive 45% price hike — and it’s all to do with AI tools (Tom’s Guide - January 17, 2025)

oopsie i tripped and spilled my link to archive dot org’s downloadable copy of Microsoft office suite for 2007, which features no AI tools and is a powerful word processor that still holds up just fine on windows 10!

I’m convinced if ppl on this site knew how crappy gifs look before you color them properly, they would appreciate editors more

for context reasons, this is how a gif I used in a recent gifset looks like without any adjustments/coloring whatsoever:

image

and here it is afterwards:

image

I truly don’t think people realize how dingy and dark most movies and tv shows actually are so they can’t appreciate the work and skill it takes to make gifs look the way your brain “remembers” it looking.

Another before and after example:

image
image

This gif needed 6 different adjustment layers, not including the sharpening process, which is its own separate challenge. The blue window was also changed to green to keep the palette more consistent and to reduce the range of colors needed, because a wider range of colors generally results in worse gif quality since gifs only support a max of 256 (compared to the millions your monitor can display).

yeah…

I always see tags and captions for .GIFs with worlds like “edit” and “my edit” and wondered what edits were even done. Now I know!

GIF editors out here showing movie editors how to sort their shit out

GIF editors need to be hired to do the colour grading in media from now on.

I invite you to imagine: preschool or kindergarten teacher Steve who, after a long day at work, gets his wires a little crossed while in bed with Eddie

Leans in to murmur in Eddie’s ear how good he’s being, how well he’s following Steve’s instructions

Accidentally murmurs, great listening ears, instead

They need to pause after that so Steve can die of embarrassment and Eddie can recover from laughing so hard he almost asphyxiates

A hard choice when there’s so much to leave behind.
Good thing Steve has a gift for him before he goes, and all Eddie needs to do is make sure he uses it.

Aka
A somewhat texting/group chat fic where smart phones were invented in the 80s

I’m going to add to this with advice for any teacher running into this situation.

Ask to borrow the kid’s computer for a second, and use the AI. Pick a word, then pick a letter that is not in that word. Ask chatGPT how many times that letter appears in said word. (Avoid “how many Ns in Mayonnaise” because that went viral and got trained out.) Hell, give ChatGPT multiple tries. Ask it to demonstrate each time that letter appears in a word.

Let the entire class witness chatGPT fail. Because it cannot count. It cannot spell. It cannot think. Please put your lesson plans aside for a class and use it as a learning opportunity.

To add to your arsenal for educating these kids, please look into the concept of AI hallucination. AI cannot perceive things and has no ability to think critically, which means it cannot tell what’s real and what’s not. Really drill into these kids that they are better off asking advice from a toddler.

I used the characterAI bot instead of chatGPT in this case, but chatGPT has the same issues, because neither bot is capable of thinking about what it’s saying.

Calling these things “artificial intelligence” is a core part of the problem. They are not intelligent in any sense of the word. They are less intelligent than the spell check and grammar check functions in Microsoft Word circa 2010.

Huzzah! First chapter of this story for the @eddiemunsonbigbang is up! Huge HUGE shout out to @gilove2dance for gorgeous art, I’m so excited for you to see it! And to @meleerage for your speedy beta skills! I kiss you tenderly on the forehead.

Summary:

It was the only thing that mattered. Yes, the kids were safe and the cracks were healed. Sure, Robin was curled up on the two-chair loveseat that might as well be made of cardboard and sandpaper for all the comfort it provided, dozing peacefully, maybe for the first time in a week, and he was both envious and so, so grateful. These were good things. And, yeah, his bandages itched, his eyes burned, his stomach growled at him to get up and move and eat something, but that didn’t matter. None of that mattered. The only thing that mattered, that held his attention, was the steady beep of the heart rate monitor as Eddie Munson lay in his hospital bed. Alive.

Steve rescued Eddie and now that they’re better, now that they’re alive, they move away with Robin and decide that maybe they can have a good life. If Steve could just stop accidentally having really intense sex dreams about a guy he’s starting to realize looks a lot like Eddie. Because that would be great.

First Chapter up on Ao3!

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

Tags and summary. Wild that anyone can base what is ‘good enough’ to read just off of kudos or comments. There are real gems out there not being read because they aren’t deemed 'popular’ enough. It’s ridiculous.

This is so sad! I only look at the kudos number to make sure it has enough and then get sad when it doesn’t because the fic is so good.
